Level-0 Character Tumbler

Overview

This supplement operationalizes funnel play for B/X-compatible tables by generating weak, disposable-but-distinct level-0 characters fast enough to run four per player.

Abstract

The Level-0 Character Tumbler is a compact OSR supplement for running funnel adventures — groups of weakly equipped, classless level-0 characters thrown into danger before earning a class. Designed for B/X-compatible systems. The procedure generates four characters per player, each with minimal HP, pre-class saves, a random occupation, and scavenged equipment. Characters who survive gain 1 XP (i.e., enough to become 1st level) and choose a class.

Character Generation Procedure

  1. Ability scores: Roll 3d6 in order for each of six scores (STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHA). May reroll "boring" characters (all +0 modifiers) or "hopeless" characters (total modifier < 0) using the d100 Ability Arrays table.
  2. HP: Roll 1d4 + CON bonus.
  3. Race and Occupation: Roll on Tables 1-5 and 1-6 (race: human, elf, dwarf, halfling; ~40 occupations spanning craftsman, farmer, soldier, criminal, etc.).
  4. Equipment: One roll on the d20 Equipment Generator table + 5d12 cp. Record one day's rations, starting weapon (from Table 1-3), and trade good.
  5. Starting stats: XP = −100 (starts in the hole), saving throws from Table 1-2 (B/X normal-man values by race), attack bonus +0, damage by Table 1-3, AC = 11 + DEX bonus + armor bonus.
  6. Send them through the meat grinder. Survivors to 1 XP gain a class and become 1st level.

Key Tables

Table 1-1: Level-0 Equipment Generator (d20): 20 items at scavenged-bargain prices — backpack, candles, clothing, crowbar, chalk, flasks, flint/steel, hammer, iron spikes, Bearhugger's Whiskey (!) , mirror, oil, pole, rations, rope, sacks, torch, whistle, wine.

Table 1-2: Saving Throws (Normal Man by race): B/X-format five-category saves (Death Ray/Poison, Magic Wands, Paralysis/Petrify, Dragon Breath, Spells) for Human/Dwarf/Elf/Halfling at normal-man (0-level) values.

Table 1-3: Weapon and Armor Statistics: damage and AC for common weapons (club, dagger, handaxe, longsword, mace, shortsword, shortbow, sling, spear, staff) and hide armor and steel helmet.

Table 1-4: Ability Arrays (d100): 50 pre-rolled stat arrays for fast character generation, bypassing individual 3d6 rolls when speed is preferred.

Tables 1-5/1-6: Race (human/dwarf/elf/halfling) and Occupation (farmer, beggar, thatcher, scribe, cutpurse, etc.) tables.

Coverage

  • Fully covered from source: six-step generation workflow, including -100 XP start and survivor promotion to 1st level.
  • Fully covered from source: Table 1-1 equipment generator, Table 1-2 saves, Table 1-3 weapon/armor stats, Table 1-4 ability arrays, and Tables 1-5/1-6 race/occupation structures.
  • Compression choice: occupational and array tables are summarized structurally rather than reproduced exhaustively.

Compatibility

Designed for B/X D&D and closely compatible OSR systems. Uses descending AC convention (AC = 11 + DEX + armor bonus; matches ascending-style framing in a B/X context). Saving throws use classic five-category B/X format. Attack bonus +0 matches OSR zero-level convention.
