Clark Ashton Smith

Overview

Clark Ashton Smith is useful for campaigns that need ornate, strange, and terminally decadent settings. Compared with stricter cosmic-terror models, Smith adds sensual language, black comedy, and courtly cruelty, making horror and wonder coexist.

Reusable Design Patterns

  • Build dying realms that are beautiful and corrupt at the same time.
  • Let sorcery dominate martial force in elite conflict.
  • Use grotesque flora, necromancy, and exotic geography as normal setting texture.
  • Keep endings morally bleak without reducing every arc to nihilism.
  • Mix dread with irony to avoid monotone despair.

Referee Uses

  • Design city-states with sorcerous courts, ritual economics, and succession intrigue.
  • Populate wilderness zones with named weird ecologies, not generic monsters.
  • Run doom-forward stories where every bargain has long-tail cost.
  • Use elevated diction for inscriptions, curses, and scene framing.
