Landmark, Hidden, Secret: Information Taxonomy
Abstract
This model divides game information into three categories that clarify when players should receive details automatically, when discovery should consume time and risk, and when failure should be possible.
The Three Layers
- Landmark information: automatic and free.
- Hidden information: requires inquiry and cost, but no failure roll.
- Secret information: roll-gated, with meaningful chance of failure.
Operational Guidance
- If info is required for play continuity, keep it landmark or hidden.
- Use secrets for optional advantages or multi-path clue structures.
- A practical flow is landmark -> hidden -> secret.
