Mr. Robot

Overview

Mr. Robot provides a different cyberpunk scale: less megacorp skyline spectacle, more mental fragmentation, coercive organizing, and operational paranoia. Its campaign value is in the overlap between technical action and unstable point-of-view, where mission success can still produce catastrophic systemic fallout.

Reusable Design Patterns

  • Tie hacking operations to personal stakes instead of abstract worldbuilding.
  • Use unreliable perception as a procedural obstacle, not only a plot twist.
  • Build revolutionary cells with real ideological fractures and coercive leadership dynamics.
  • Escalate from symbolic attacks to infrastructure-level consequences.
  • Let every successful exploit produce second-order crises the crew did not predict.

Referee Uses

  • Frame missions as nested operations: technical breach, social engineering, and media aftermath.
  • Use identity-fracture mechanics for stress, memory uncertainty, and decision conflict.
  • Keep antagonists distributed across corporate, state, and clandestine actors.
  • Design downtime scenes as investigation and self-audit, not just recovery.
