Lazy DM Eight Steps
Overview
The Lazy DM eight-step workflow is a session-prep scaffold that prioritizes table-ready prompts over exhaustive scripting. It is designed to reduce prep time while increasing improv flexibility.
The Eight Steps
- Review the characters and add one hook for each.
- Create a strong start where something immediately happens.
- Outline potential scenes as brief, disposable notes.
- Define secrets and clues decoupled from fixed discovery locations.
- Sketch fantastic locations with one to three notable features.
- List important NPCs with goals and quick portrayal cues.
- Choose relevant monsters independent of fixed encounter scripts.
- Select treasure and rewards that fit characters and campaign tone.
Why It Matters
The structure pushes prep toward reusable building blocks instead of plot rails. In practice this improves pacing and lets referee effort follow player choice.
