Lovecraft is most useful at the table as procedure for revelation pressure. The central loop is inquiry -> clue coherence -> existential destabilization. Campaigns inspired here should reward investigation while making each answer structurally dangerous.
Reusable Design Patterns
- Discovery is a threat escalator, not a safety tool.
- Human institutions are fragile against deep-time and nonhuman agency.
- Threats are often indirect until very late: documents, dreams, cult traces, altered geography.
- Keep scale mismatch explicit: local people versus nonlocal powers.
- Use testimony, reports, and journals as primary encounter vehicles.
Referee Uses
- Track knowledge exposure with clocks tied to panic, attention, and contamination.
- Build mysteries where clues are true but interpretations remain hazardous.
- Stage confrontations around survival and delay, not conquest.
- Keep major entities mostly offscreen to preserve dread and uncertainty.
