The Lawnmower Man
Overview
The Lawnmower Man is best used as cautionary cyber-horror: a benevolent intervention becomes an extraction pipeline for weaponized cognition, then mutates into a posthuman break event. It is useful when a campaign wants to stage the collapse from clinical optimism into uncontrolled transcendence.
Reusable Design Patterns
- Use uplift experiments with mixed motives: one actor seeks healing while sponsors seek weaponization.
- Make cognitive enhancement nonlinear: intelligence gains can arrive with new, unstable capabilities.
- Run escalation from lab incidents to city-scale infrastructure risk.
- Treat virtual space as an acceleration chamber for identity transformation.
- End with distributed systems breach: escaping into networks is more dangerous than physical escape.
Referee Uses
- Build missions around containment, ethics, and responsibility rather than simple neutralization.
- Use backdoor channels and maintenance links as final-act vectors for catastrophic spread.
- Let NPC researchers split between duty of care and institutional compliance.
- Frame posthuman antagonists as both victim and existential threat.
