Videodrome
Overview
Videodrome is ideal for campaigns where media is not merely propaganda but biological intervention. Its strongest contribution is the collapse of boundaries between transmission, belief, and body: signals become pathogens, ideology becomes surgery, and the protagonist can no longer cleanly separate hallucination from operation.
Reusable Design Patterns
- Make broadcast channels active threat surfaces, not flavor text.
- Use body-horror as communication medium: mutation conveys doctrine, allegiance, or contamination.
- Build antagonists as moral movements using media purity narratives.
- Keep reality uncertain but actionable: players can still choose, even when certainty is impossible.
- Let technology become organic and vice versa to destabilize normal tool assumptions.
Referee Uses
- Run investigations where each clue may also be an infection vector.
- Stage faction conflict around control of transmitters, studios, and neurological distribution points.
- Use unreliable sensory events to force verification procedures at the table.
- Build finales around choosing what kind of body-politic survives the signal war.
