Cthulhu Mythos
Overview
The Cthulhu Mythos contributes campaign architecture more than single-plot templates. Its best use is as a layered continuity engine where symbols, entities, cults, and documents recur across otherwise distinct incidents.
Reusable Design Patterns
- Treat canon as intentionally unstable: contradiction can signal perspective, not error.
- Use cults as distributed infrastructure instead of one central villain group.
- Maintain multiple interpretation tiers: folklore, scholarly, operative, and occult.
- Keep artifacts and texts as active vectors that alter behavior.
- Let conspiracy and cosmic dread overlap without collapsing into one explanation.
Referee Uses
- Build campaign dossiers with recurring names, places, and rites across cases.
- Seed handouts as partial truths from mutually biased sources.
- Rotate sub-settings (town, city, dreamspace, expedition) under one mythic frame.
- Tie escalating revelations to faction responses rather than simple combat scaling.
