Cthulhu Mythos

Overview

The Cthulhu Mythos contributes campaign architecture more than single-plot templates. Its best use is as a layered continuity engine where symbols, entities, cults, and documents recur across otherwise distinct incidents.

Reusable Design Patterns

  • Treat canon as intentionally unstable: contradiction can signal perspective, not error.
  • Use cults as distributed infrastructure instead of one central villain group.
  • Maintain multiple interpretation tiers: folklore, scholarly, operative, and occult.
  • Keep artifacts and texts as active vectors that alter behavior.
  • Let conspiracy and cosmic dread overlap without collapsing into one explanation.

Referee Uses

  • Build campaign dossiers with recurring names, places, and rites across cases.
  • Seed handouts as partial truths from mutually biased sources.
  • Rotate sub-settings (town, city, dreamspace, expedition) under one mythic frame.
  • Tie escalating revelations to faction responses rather than simple combat scaling.
